Brief Description: The Gillespie Family Papers contain photocopies of original family correspondence and legal and financial papers. Most of these materials pertain to the family of Robert Gillespie, a son of the Revolutionary War hero, Colonel Daniel Gillespie (1743-1829). The bulk of the collection consists of indentures and deeds involving Robert Gillespie, his siblings, and his children and their spouses. Most correspondence is addressed to Robert Gillespie’s wife, Nancy Hanner Gillespie, from her brother, James Hanner, and her sons, Daniel D. and Robert H. Gillespie. Other materials include: three photographs, one a family portrait, another of the family homestead, and the third a portrait of Joseph Edgar Freeland; a photocopy of a 1795 map of the “Tennassee Government formerly part of North Carolina.” (Note: In this collection, the family name is spelled “Gillaspie” through the mid-nineteenth century.)
