INTRODUCTION

The Calvin Jones Papers consist of seven financial documents from the Civil War and a panoramic photograph of a World War I cavalry unit that includes W.W. Beall, the donor’s husband.

Provenance: This collection was donated by Mrs. W.W. Beall of Greensboro and assigned accession numbers 1983.126.1-2.

Processing: This collection was processed by Karen C. Carroll, and the finding aid was completed in September 1983.


BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Calvin Jones was from Tarboro in Edgecomb County, North Carolina. W.W. Beall was the son of Dr. W.T. Beall of Greensboro.


SCOPE & CONTENT NOTE

The panoramic photograph is of the officer’s class at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, on February 10, 1917. W.W. Beall, the donor’s husband, is pictured sixth from the right on the second row.

The remaining seven items are Confederate States of America financial documents. Two are 1865 receipts (February 1, April 4) for a purchase of corn from Jones by the Confederate States of America. Two 1865 tax-in-kind estimates are included, on form #2 and form #3. An 1864 receipt to John Norfleet is for the purchase of a bond. Other items are an 1865 nontaxable $1,000 certificate (6%) and a $500 Confederate States of America bond (March 1863 issue).
