INTRODUCTION

This scrapbook was compiled by/for Frances Patterson Smith, a 20th century North Carolina poet from Liberty, North Carolina.

Provenance: This scrapbook was accessioned with the group of medical books belonging to Dr. Abram Jones, a physician in Forsyth County in the late 1800s. It was assigned accession number 1981.170.45.

Processing: This item was processed by Karen C. Carroll with the finding aid completed in August 1983.


BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Frances Patterson Smith grew up in Liberty, North Carolina. While in high school she developed a love for poetry and began to write. When she later attended Salem College, she continued this interest. She received encouragement from such as Paul Greene and James Larkin Pearson.


SCOPE & CONTENT NOTE

The scrapbook consists of newspaper and magazine articles, personal correspondence received by Frances Patterson Smith, and several photographs. The items mainly date from the 1930s and 1940s and include articles about William Sidney Porter and James Larkin Pearson. Autographs include Paul Greene (ALS); James Larkin Pearson (TLS); and R. B. House (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor, 1948) (TLS). The main weaknesses of the scrapbook are that it is limited in scope and the last half is blank.
