Brief Description: Likely retained by Frances R. Squires (1919-1994) or Irvin Squires (1911-1992) after serving as secretary of Greensboro’s Garden Wall Club, this collection provides a portrait of that organization’s operations between 1950 and 1963. Monthly meeting and executive board meeting minutes document proposals, activities, elections and club decisions, and are summarized in the yearbooks. Meeting minutes, yearbooks and scrapbooks indicate that the Garden Wall Club’s activities consisted of raising funds for charitable donations, organizing workshops, and hosting guest speakers from local organizations and businesses such as Guilford Garden, Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs, and Lindley Park Garden Club. As the embellished scrapbook’s clippings indicate, several news organizations regularly reported on the projects of the Garden Wall Club, particularly their charitable work for the Cerebral Palsy School. Included in the scrapbook are clippings from The Greensboro Record, Greensboro Daily News and The North Carolina Gardener. Also included is a 1958 issue of McCall’s containing photographs and a short article about the Squires house at 2307 North Elm St. This residence is notable for its interior, which was designed by students attending the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. Edward Lowenstein (1913–1970) designed the exterior.
